This one is a mystery. The late Rick Carlile identified Daniel L. Robinson as a member of the 16th New York Heavy Artillery. Although his middle initial is omitted from his record by the Report of New York Adjutant General it appears in both the New York Muster Roll Abstracts and pension file cards. To complicate matters, his middle initial is also shown as \"T.\", not \"L.\"To further muddy the waters, Robinson enlisted and mustered out as a private however this subject is shown as a first sergeant. In the photo the chevrons appear pale not dark (red) to indicate the artillery branch of the military. I attempted to color the image usingChatGPT, but the insignia look charcoal.
Canadian born Daniel L. Robinson was a substitute for Jas.?Howard Pickett, Seneca, NY prior to the draft. Robinson enlisted at the age of 22 on August 3, 1864, at Seneca, NY, stood5’ 9”, had blue eyes, brown hair, a fair complexion, and was a farmer by trade. There is no further record according to this entry in the NY Muster Roll Abstracts.
Another entry in the NY Muster Roll Abstracts, which lists his middle initial as \"T.\", says he enlisted on November 11,1863, at the age of 20 at Little Falls, NY, and mustered in on February 8, 1864,with Company H, 16th New York Artillery. The word “Heavy” isomitted in both records. He mustered out on August 21, 1865, still at the rank of private.
I\'ve tried multiple sources to confirm or refute the ID: Google searches, online Civil War forums, Civil War Photo Sleuth, AI face recognition websites and failed in my quest. The lack of a backmark doesn\'t pinpoint the photographer\'s studio but maybe the carpet and chair provide clues. Perhaps someone in the community will recognize him. He could be a sleeper!
