Upon hearing news of King\'s assassination the Panthers quickly mobilized their forcesacross the United States. Theyorganized demonstrations and uprisings to demand justice. The response by the authorities was excessive even for the standards of the raciallysegregated 1960s.Scores of African Americans were killed by the police simply for exercising there right to demonstrate. FYI The King assassination riots, also known as the Holy Week Uprising, was a wave of civil disturbance which swept the United States following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968. Many believe it to be the greatest wave of social unrest the United States had experienced since the Civil War. Riots raged across the country. President Lyndon Johnson called out the National Guard and little civil disobedience was tolerated by the authorities.
