Black Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that no crystalline structure develops. Its intense black colour comes mainly from microscopic iron oxide inclusions. Hardness is 5β5.5 on the Mohs scale. Major sources include Mexico, the western United States, Iceland, and Central America. Historically valued by many cultures for tools, blades, and polished mirrors (notably used by the Aztecs for scrying and divination).
