Black Lacquer Hand-Painted Fairy Tale Rider Trinket Box, Made in USSR For Sale

Large vintage Soviet Palekh lacquer box, hand-painted in 1975 with a scene from Alexander Pushkin’s Ruslan and Ludmila, commonly titled “Ruslan and the Head.”This intricate miniature painting depicts the mounted hero Ruslan confronting the enormous magical Head. Executed in the traditional Palekh style with vivid egg-tempera colors, extremely fine lines and extensive gold detailing against a glossy black background. Decorative gold ornamentation continues along the sides.The lid is signed in Cyrillic by the artist, dated 1975 and marked “No. 7712 Palekh.” The underside is marked “Made in USSR.”Measures approximately 9½ inches long by 7 inches wide. Constructed from traditional lacquered papier-mâché.The exterior artwork displays beautifully with light age-related surface wear. The red lacquer interior has substantial wrinkling, cracking and areas of lifting, as clearly shown in the photographs. The box is therefore being sold in vintage, as-is condition.
