He was known as \"The Man-Eater\" during his playing days.1970 Marshall University Football Team Plane Crash - On November 14, 1970 the worst sports related air tragedy in US history occured, 75 lives were lost when Southern Airways Flight 932 crashed. Marshall assistant coach Red Dawson and grad assistant Gale Parker didn\'t fly with the Herd football team that day as they normally do, Instead they made a recruiting visit. They drove to meet with Billy Joe recruiting him to transfer to Marshall.
