Here is a wonderful fossil metatarsal bonefrom an Edmontosaurus, a Hadrosaur dinosaur from the Cretaceous, 74 to 66 millionyears ago, the last age of the Dinosaurs.
The metatarsal bones arethe long bones in the mid-foot that connect the ankle (tarsals) to the toe bones (phalanges). This is from the right back foot.
From the Lance (Lance Creek) Formation in Wyoming.
It is in remarkable condition(photos), measuring about5.12\" (130 mm)and weighing about6.85oz. (196 grams), not including the stand.
Some of these parts of this bone wereglued together. With dinosaur bones,this is not considered damage. In fact, the vast majority of museum dinosaurskeleton displays are made of bones that are either replicas (this is genuine)or pieces glued together.
The Hadrosaurs are also known asduck-billed dinosaurs, because of the shape of their heads. They wereherbivores. The Edmontosaurus is themost famous of the hadrosaurs. Manyyears ago, they were referred to as Trachodon, but that name is no longerwidely used.
