Matt Reeves, the director of DC Entertainment\'s The Batman (2022), confirmed on May 9th, 2026, that the film\'s direct sequel, The Batman II starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, has officially gone into active production. With a scheduled release date of October 2027, the film sees most of its star-studded cast returning and will also add two very notable actors -- Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson -- to the cast in the roles of Harvey Dent and his wife, Gilda Dent. Before the film\'s end, Harvey will ultimately be transformed into his twisted and often villainous alter-ego, Two-Face.
That late transformation, of course, fully eliminated Harvey Dent from being the film\'s main villain. Both Riddler and Penguin as well as The Joker exist in the background, but will have minor roles. This leaves the unanswered question: Who exactly is to be revealed as The Batman II\'s \'Big Bad\'?
As was revealed for The Batman, the overall story of the eventual The Batman Trilogy draws its inspiration from DC Comics\' BATMAN THE LONG HALLOWEEN, the 13-part epic by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale that frames each of its 13 issues against a specific holiday, with the comics\' overall story taking place over the course of one year. The Batman II continues this progression of time, with the movie\'s events taking place during the Christmas holiday season. And much like The Long Halloween, in which Batman must discover the \"HOLIDAY KILLER\", the unknown figure at the heart of the story\'s crime and murders, the 2027 sequel also doesn\'t have a discernable villain.
Speculation, then, has fallen upon Johansson\'s GILDA DENT, a deep-cut comic book character and an unknown to most casual movie fans. Gilda was present in The Long Halloween, but only in a minor role ... until the reveal late in the series that Gilda herself was the mysterious Holiday Killer. She was the last person anybody even thought to suspect.
Johansson\'s star power suggests that her role in The Batman II isn\'t one that legitimately should take a back set to Sebastian Stan\'s. Moreover, as the former Black Widow of the MCU, the vast majority of the audience is well-conditioned to only think of Johansson as a hero, or at least someone on the side of Right. For her to be the film\'s surprise killer will undoubtedly -- and thrillingly, and memorably -- catch many off-guard. For Johansson herself, being the Bad Guy is the type of different role she would professionally seek out, especially in a franchise so highly regarded as Reeve\'s DC Elseworld\'s take on the Dark Knight Detective.
Batman: The Long Halloween #1 is, then, a significant Double-Key for the DC Universe. It\'s the book that gave rise to this on-screen iteration of Batman as well as frame its entire story, and its the issue which First Introduces the Holiday Killer as well as taking the otherwise obscure character of Gilda Dent and introducing her into the story. Essentially, it\'s a hugely important single issue, offering three (3) First Appearances under one cover. No wonder it\'s supremely collectable, rare, and of a demand that will only increase once additional news from the set as well as the cast ofThe Batman II is reported with increasing regularity.
