Step back into the early 19th century with this remarkably preserved American folk-art document box, hand-set with a bold brass-studded date of 1842. A true survivor of early Americana, this chest showcases incredible historic craftsmanship that sets it far apart from standard primitive storage boxes.
The front of the box features an explicitly dated timestamp formed from hand-pounded brass tacks. The dome-top lid retains its original hand-forged iron swing handle, beautifully flanked by a custom brass-studded owner's monogram reading "M P" and "B G". Beneath the edge tacks, remnants of the original scalloped leather border trim remain preserved, showing that this chest was once fully wrapped in hide before aging into its current, gorgeous bare-wood patina.
The Smoking Gun for Collectors:
Crack open the lid to find a purist's dream: the original 1840s leather hinges remain fully intact and functional. Finding an early traveling box where the organic leather hinges haven't rotted away or been replaced by modern iron hardware is exceptionally rare. The interior also features a raised wooden dust lip (stepped inner collar) designed to tightly seal away valuable papers, as well as original glue and paper residue where historical newsprint lining once sat.
With its incredible structural honesty and unmistakable focal-piece appeal, this dated chest is ready to anchor a mantel, primitive bench, or high-end Americana collection.

Excellent, honest antique condition with wear appropriate for a 180+ year old object. Beautifully aged wood grain with a rich, dark natural patina. The iron drop-front latch and shield-shaped lock plate are original and intact (no key included). No modern repairs, plywood, or modifications.
