A substantial and finely crafted Pre-Columbian Revival zoomorphic Hook and pendant combination, modeled after indigenous Central and South American cast-gold antiquities (such as those from the Tairona, Chiriquí, or Parita cultures). This highly stylized piece depicts an abstract amphibian form, displaying a rich matte, antique-gold finish meant to emulate ancient tumbaga alloys. The dorsal surface features an intricate central spine adorned with concentric, dual-coiled rope filigree scrolls, flanked by parallel braided wire borders. The frog is designed with prominent, raised spherical eyes and broad, flattened webbed hands and feet that curl cleanly along the sides. A deliberate suspension hoop is integrated at the base of the feet, standard for the historical amulets this recreates to allow for dangling fringe additions or lower drop beads.
The piece has significant structural heft, weighing 61.2 grams, indicating a high-quality solid cast manufacturing process typical of high-end runway costume jewelry houses of the late 20th century.
The reverse features dual functionality, equipped with a traditional Hook: The bent prong extending outward at the top acts as the buckle catch. It inserts directly into the adjustment holes of the opposite end of the belt strap to secure it around the waist.
And an Integrated Hanging Loop: The circular ring at the very bottom (visible at the top in this inverted view) remains functional if a wearer chooses to thread a cord or heavy chain through it to wear it alternatively as an oversized statement pendant, though its structural build is optimized for a belt.
The reverse is authenticated with the artisan/maker stamp "AE".
