Art Deco Bookends by Hester Mabel White, Bronze & Onyx, Circa 1930:
$1170.00

A charming and beautifully executed pair of English Art Deco patinated bronze and onyx bookends by British sculptor Hester Mabel White, circa 1930.

The bookends depict two Chinese schoolboys in complementary poses, capturing a delightful scene of childhood curiosity and learning. One boy is seated on the ground, deeply absorbed in reading an open book, while his companion stands leaning against the opposing bookend, peering over its top, with two closed books resting at his feet.

Both figures are finely modeled in bronze, with expressive facial features, carefully detailed traditional Chinese attire, and beautifully rendered hairstyles. The bronzes retain their attractive original greenish-brown patina, with subtle warm highlights accentuating the sculptural details.

Each figure is mounted on a substantial pale onyx base with an upright rectangular book support. The beautifully veined stone, displaying delicate cream, ivory, and warm amber tones, provides an elegant contrast to the richly patinated bronze figures.

The charming subject matter, naturalistic modeling, and harmonious combination of bronze and onyx exemplify the decorative appeal of English Art Deco sculpture of the period.

The onyx bases are engraved "H.M. White", for British sculptor Hester Mabel White.

This particular model is illustrated in Bryan Catley's Art Deco and Other Figures (1978), page 330, providing an important published reference for these distinctive bookends.

An exceptionally appealing pair of decorative and functional sculptures, ideal for a library, study, or collection of fine Art Deco bronzes.
