The Meaning of the Archangel Michael Icon
The name Michael means “Who is like God?” The Orthodox Church honors him as Archistrategos, a commander of the bodiless powers.
Daniel identifies Michael as a protector of God’s people. Revelation describes Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon and his angels. This victory manifests God’s power, not an authority independent of Him.
An icon of Michael calls the faithful to courage, humility, and trust in God amid spiritual struggle. In asking his intercession and protection, Orthodox Christians worship God alone, whom the angels faithfully serve.
