This is a antique copper theca with silver front,inside a relic (of the clothing) of SaintThérèse of Lisieux.Relic in place and wax seal and threads intact. Diameter 1,5inch.Sealed with the seal of Gustave JosephWaffelaert (1847–1931) who was the 22nd bishop of Bruges in Belgium.

Profile

Born to a pious middle-class French familyof tradesmen; daughter of Blessed Louis Martin and Blessed Marie-AzelieGuérin Martin, and all four of her sisters became nuns. Her mother died whenFrancoise-Marie was only four, and the family moved to Lisieux, Normandy, France tobe closer to family. Cured from an illness at age eightwhen a statue of the Blessed Virgin smiled at her. Educated bythe Benedictine nuns of Notre-Dame-du-Pre. Confirmed thereat age eleven. Just before her 14th birthday she received a vision ofthe Child Jesus; she immediately understood the great sacrifice that had beenmade for her, and developed an unshakeable faith. Tried to join the Carmelites,but was turned down due to her age. Pilgrim to Rome, Italy atfor the Jubilee of Pope Leo XIII whom she met and who knew ofher desire to become a nun. Joined the Carmelites at Lisieuxon 9 April 1888 at age 15, taking her final vow on 8September 1890 at age 17. Known by all for her complete devotion tospiritual development and to the austerities of the Carmelite rule.Due to health problems resulting from her ongoing fight with tuberculosis,her superiors ordered her not to fast. Novice mistress at age 20. At age22 she was ordered by her prioress to begin writing her memories andideas, which material would turn into the book History of a Soul. Therese defined her path to God andholiness as The Little Way,which consisted of child-like love and trust in God. She had an on-goingcorrespondence with Carmelite missionaries in China, oftenstating how much she wanted to come work with them. Many miracles attributedto her. Declared a Doctor of the Church in 1997 by Pope JohnPaul II.

Gustave Joseph Waffelaertwas born in Rollegem on 27 August 1847. After attending St Vincent\'s college,Ypres, and the Minor Seminary, Roeselare (1865–1867) he entered the MajorSeminary, Bruges. He was ordained to the priesthood in Bruges on 17 December1870, and from 1871 to 1875 served as an assistant priest in the parish ofBlankenberge.

Hewas sent to the Catholic University of Leuven for further studies, graduatingDoctor of Theology in 1889 with a thesis on doubtful cases in moral theology,De Dubio solvendo in re morali. He was then appointed to teach moral theologyat the major seminary in Bruges. In 1890 he served as vicar general and in 1894was appointed archpriest of the cathedral chapter of St. Salvator\'s. He wasconsecrated as bishop of Bruges on 25 July 1895.

Duringhis episcopate, he supported the development and modernisation of Catholiceducation in his diocese, particularly in vocational and technical fields, andencouraged the establishment of the Revue pratique de l\'Enseignement in 1896.In line with developing Catholic social teaching he favoured a range of socialapostolates, such as mutual insurance societies, savings unions, employmentbrokerages, trade unions, agricultural cooperatives, and youth work, but wishedto ensure that these remained under clerical rather than lay leadership. Healso opposed the emergence of Daensism and Christian Democracy, warning againsttheir \"fallacious promises\" in an 1896 pastoral letter, and refusingArthur Verhaegen permission for a meeting of the Lige démocratique in Bruges in1899.

Hereceived the pallium on 21 May 1920. In 1929, Henricus Lamiroy [nl] wasappointed his coadjutor bishop, to succeed him upon his death. Waffelaert diedin Bruges on 18 December 1931. Originally buried in the city\'s cemetery, in2002 his remains were transferred to the crypt of Bruges Cathedral.
