Antique c.1890 Victorian 4-Tube Jeweled Gas Parlor Heater - Cast-Iron Rococo Frame with Multi-Faceted Glass Cabochons & Vintage Lamp Conversion
  • Provenance & Industrial History: Circa 1890. Originally manufactured as a clean-burning luminous gas parlor heater, the lower right side of the cast-iron base still retains its mechanical brass gas turn-cock handle and threaded pipe nipple intake. What makes this specific piece historically fascinating is an early-to-mid 20th-century adaptive reuse electrical conversion. A horizontal steel mounting rod installed across the lower rear openwork frame supports four independent, upward-facing porcelain-insulated light sockets tucked into the base of each tube, wired in parallel with early copper cloth-covered cordage and an inline toggle switch. This allowed the owner to safely illuminate the glass jewels with electrical bulbs rather than open gas flames.

  • Condition Assessment: Excellent antique condition. The cast-iron framing is entirely structurally sound with no cracks, fractures, or missing scroll segments. The black enameled columns are remarkably preserved, and every single multi-faceted glass jewel remains intact and securely seated in its decorative hardware.

Archival Safety Note: While the early cloth-covered wiring and inline toggle switch add immense historical value to the piece as a display item, do not plug this into a modern electrical outlet as-is. The historical cloth cordage is an internal fire hazard. To safely use it as a functional ambient lamp, a lighting bench professional should pull a modern reproduction cloth-covered wire through the existing tracks.
