Antique hand-carved devotional crucifix dating to the late 19th century (circa 1880–1900), based on construction, carving style, inscriptions, and period wear.
This crucifix is hand carved, not molded, with visible tool marks and irregularities consistent with vernacular religious workmanship rather than factory production. The corpus (figure of Christ) is carved in relief and shows significant devotional wear from age and handling.
Front Inscription (as it appears)
“PATER”
“FORGIVE THEM”
These words reference Christ’s words from the Cross.
Meaning in English:
“Father, forgive them.”
Center / Vertical Inscription (as it appears)
“PECCATA MUNDI DELE”
Translation:
“Remove (or blot out) the sins of the world.”
This is a traditional Latin devotional phrase associated with Christ’s sacrifice.
Back Inscription (as it appears)
The reverse contains additional Latin devotional text, partially worn from age and use. Lettering style, language, and wear are consistent with late 19th-century religious pieces intended for personal devotion rather than display.
(Exact wording is partially obscured due to age and wear; all visible text is shown clearly in photographs.)
