tribal opium and tobacco container from the
Rajasthan/Gujarat border region of Northern
India. This exceptional piece is hand-carved
from a single, dense block of native hardwood
and remains structurally sound.The box features its original, heavily patina
metal itrakir (itragiri) fretwork and a secure,
tight-fitting lid. Designed with a classic low-
profile, flat base, it ensures absolute stability
on low tables or textiles. Its signature narrow-
mouth design was traditionally utilized by
merchants to prevent evaporation, successfully
preserving expensive botanical pastes and molasses-
tobacco blends.Remarkably substantial in the hand, the container
boasts an excellent weight-to-size ratio that confirms
its premium antique craftsmanship. The metalwork
displays a rich, undisturbed dark oxidation and natural
patina highly sought after by antiquities collectors.
