Antique WWI Era Prismatic Rangefinder (Weldon Pattern) w/ Leather Case:
$345.00

For sale is a genuine piece of early 20th-century military field gear: a Prismatic Rangefinder (Weldon Pattern), complete with its original leather carrying case.

This handheld optical instrument was a standard tool for British infantry officers and artillery crews during the late Victorian era and through World War I. It was used to calculate the distance to a target using trigonometry and fixed-angle prisms—essential for setting sights before the age of laser rangefinders.

Key Features:

  • Design: Classic "Weldon" pattern with multiple glass prisms housed in a blackened brass/bronze frame.

  • Serial Number: Stamped "1120" on the casing in two places, indicating an early production model.

  • Original Data Table: The inside of the lid retains the original paper "MEMORANDA" label. This rare ballistics table lists "Range of Projectile," "Height above sea," and sighting adjustments (e.g., "Sight for 950 yards"). Finding this label intact and legible is highly uncommon.

  • Case: Original stitched leather case with button closure.

Condition Report:

  • Optics: The glass prisms appear to be intact without major cracks or chips.

  • Body: The metal body has not been polished, retaining a desirable historical patina.

  • Leather: The case shows wear consistent with age and field use (scuffs, softening), but holds the instrument securely. The closure tab is present.

  • Function: The hinge mechanism opens and closes smoothly.

Measurements:the instrument is approx 3" long x 1 3/4" wide x 1" tall

Collector's Note:While the specific maker's mark (e.g., J.H. Steward) is not visible, the construction and serial number placement are consistent with high-quality British military contract pieces from the 1900–1918 period. This is a fantastic display piece for collectors of WWI militaria, field optics, or scientific instruments.
