Full DescriptionAntique Vienna Cold-Painted Bronze Mallard Duck – Austrian – Circa 1900
Charming antique cold-painted bronze Mallard duck, likely Austrian and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
This small bronze is exceptionally appealing in person, with finely modeled feathering throughout the body and wings, detailed webbed feet, a long bill and a wonderfully natural stance.
Particularly attractive is the blue wing speculum, which remains clearly visible against the surrounding feather detail. The figure also retains attractive dark coloration to the head, a warm reddish-brown breast, lighter body tones and orange coloration to the feet.
The naturally aged surface and remaining cold paint give the piece exactly the kind of character collectors look for in early animal bronzes. There is expected rubbing and scattered wear to the painted surface from age and handling, but the figure retains good color and presents very nicely overall.
The detailed casting is especially impressive given the figure\'s small scale. Individual feathers are defined across the wings and body, while the head, bill, eyes, legs and webbed feet are all carefully modeled.
The style and construction are consistent with the tradition of Vienna/Austrian cold-painted bronze animal miniatures produced around the turn of the 20th century. These small naturalistic animal figures were produced by a number of Austrian workshops during the period.
No signature or maker\'s mark has been located, so this example is being offered without attribution to a specific workshop or maker.
Measures approximately 2 inches tall. Please refer to the photographs with ruler for additional measurements and scale.
A beautiful little antique bronze with excellent character and a particularly appealing subject. It would make a wonderful addition to a collection of Vienna bronzes, Austrian cold-painted bronzes, antique animal miniatures, Mallard or duck collectibles, sporting art, hunting collectibles, or antique bird figures.
