Description
A beautiful and unusual antique Victorian miniature scent/perfume bottle, dating approximately c.1860–1880.
This little bottle is especially striking because of its exceptionally deep, jewel-like faceting. The rich ruby-colored glass is surrounded by large polished clear facets, creating wonderful flashes of color as the bottle is turned. The strongly waisted form gives it an almost gemstone-like appearance. THE LID SHUTS TIGHT THAT'S ALWAYS A PLUS!
The bottle is fitted with an ornately decorated hinged metal cap and retains its delicate original-style safety chain. The metal is unmarked and has not been tested. It has a warm gilt appearance in areas with darker age patina and some silvery coloration showing through. It may be gilt metal or another period metal construction; I am making no claim as to gold or silver content.
The glass and cutting are consistent with the type of high-quality ruby cut glass associated with 19th-century Central European/Bohemian production, although there are no identifying marks present, so the exact origin cannot be confirmed.
This is a true miniature pocket-sized scent bottle, measuring approximately 2¼ inches long.
Condition
As found antique condition. There are a few minor flakes/flea bites along some of the cut glass edges, as expected with a small faceted glass bottle of this age. Please enlarge and examine the photographs, as they form an important part of the condition description. I did not see them without a loupe.
The ornate hinged cap and chain remain present. The metal shows patina, oxidation, surface wear and normal aging consistent with its considerable age. The bottle has not been aggressively cleaned or polished.
Despite the minor age-related glass flakes, the dramatic faceting remains beautiful and the bottle displays exceptionally well.
A particularly attractive miniature Victorian scent bottle with unusually bold, deeply cut ruby-and-clear glass — much more dramatic in person than the more commonly encountered examples.
