This is a lovely antique Victorian oil lamp in opaque white milk glass, complete with its original matching dome shade, brass burner assembly, and glass chimney. The lamp stands approximately 8.5 inches tall to the top of the shade collar (taller with the chimney in place).
The bulbous font (fuel reservoir) is molded with a raised, textured pattern of stylized acanthus-style foliage and small daisy-like flowers, all hand-painted in a soft teal-blue that stands out beautifully against the milk-white ground. The shoulder of the font is banded in a solid teal collar where the brass burner fitting is mounted. The matching dome-shaped shade continues the same white milk glass body, finished at its collar with a painted gold band, and features a fine, all-over crackle glaze (craquelure) typical of aged milk glass. The brass burner is a crown-style gallery burner fitted with the original wick-adjustment thumbwheel, and the lamp retains its clear glass chimney.
Milk glass oil lamps like this one were extremely popular parlor and bedroom lighting during the Victorian era, roughly the 1870s through 1890s, prized for the way the opaque white glass diffused lamplight softly through a room. Hand-painted and molded decoration in this style, florals and foliage picked out in a single accent color against milk-white glass, was a common and beloved decorative treatment of the period, produced by numerous American and European glasshouses. No maker\'s mark is visible on this example, so it is offered as a lovely, complete Victorian-style milk glass lamp rather than attributed to a specific glasshouse; the coordinated font-and-shade pairing (matching glass body, glaze, and decoration) is a real strength, since mismatched shades are common in this category.
Condition: Good antique condition. The burner mechanism and chimney appear complete and original to the lamp.
A wonderful piece for collectors of Victorian lighting, milk glass, or antique oil lamps, and equally charming as a display piece or converted to electric use.
