Antique Victorian Compo Wood Frame 17.5x29\" Overall, 12x18\" Opening Ornate Crest For Sale

A substantial antique frame with real presence, this one dates to roughly the late 1890s through early 1900s, based on its construction and ornamentation. The molding features applied compo (composition) ornament in a rope-and-bead pattern just under half an inch wide, framing the opening on all sides, with a carved-look pediment crest at the top featuring a shell and scroll motif. The substrate appears to be a softwood, likely pine or poplar, consistent with frames of this style and era, when compo work over a plain wood core replaced the labor of true hand-carving.

Condition:
Review images, there is honest wear in this frame. There is seam separation at the corner, gilding wear, missing pieces of the compo in the upper crest. The patina and wear are consistent with age and have not been touched up or refinished. There are cracks that are forming along the top crest compo.
