Antique U.S. Army M1902 Canvas Haversack Rock Island Arsenal Complete w/ StrapFree Shipping for Domestic U.S. Buyers
Up for sale is an exceptional piece of early 20th-century American military history: an authentic U.S. Army Model 1902 Canvas Haversack. This field gear bag is an untouched estate find, manufactured by the legendary Rock Island Arsenal. The interior flap retains its original, highly collectible blue ink factory stamp reading \"ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL\" alongside early inspection numbers. The front flap displays a bold, iconic stenciled \"U.S.\" block graphic. Most importantly, this haversack remains in its complete, historically intact configuration. It includes its original leather shoulder/belt strap, metal D-ring mounts, and the rare original wire hook attachment clips on the reverse side.
Key Features: Model: U.S. Army M1902 Haversack / Ration Field BagManufacturer: Rock Island Arsenal (RIA)
Era: Early 1900s (Pre-WWI / Indian Wars transition era)Completeness: Includes original leather strap hardware and wire hanging hooks. The number \"271\" stenciled on the inside flap is a military rack or roster number. Military Collectors favor gear with visible rack numbers. It serves as proof of authentic field use.
Condition: Great, untouched antique condition considering its age and field use. The canvas features a beautiful, rugged patina with light, authentic field staining and scuffs that validate its history. The canvas has no major blowout holes, tears, or dry rot. The internal Rock Island Arsenal stamp is partially visible and completely authentic. The leather strap shows expected historical cracking and stiffening from age but remains structurally attached. A premier piece for advanced US military or Rock Island Arsenal collectors.
Ships fast, securely, and fully insured!Additional Information: This bag is categorized as Pre-WWI (1898–1913) because it represents a highly specific, short-lived design era that was completely phased out by the time American troops headed to Europe in 1917.The military timeline and design features prove its age:
1. The 1910 Infantry Equipment Overhaul: In 1910 the U.S. Army completely changed how soldiers carried gear, introducing the M1910 Infantry Equipment system. This new system replaced all loose khaki canvas shoulder bags with an integrated, heavy-duty backpack assembly (the M1910 Haversack) that attached directly to a webbed cartridge belt. Because this bag uses the older, loose shoulder-strap design (M1902), it belongs squarely to that decade before the massive 1910 modernization update.
2. The Rock Island Arsenal Blue StampThe specific blue-ink block text stamp used by the Rock Island Arsenal is a definitive diagnostic marker. During the late 1890s through about 1906, the arsenal utilized this exact style of blue stenciling on their duck-canvas gear. By the time World War I began, military manufacturing shifted to massive commercial sub-contractors who used dark black ink stamps, stylized circular logos, or printed tags.
3. The Pancho Villa Expedition EraBags like this were the primary standard-issue field gear for the U.S. Regular Army during the Border War and the Pancho Villa Expedition. While a few leftover M1902 bags were pulled from warehouses for National Guard units in early 1917, the true frontline era for this exact canvas pattern was entirely pre-World War I.
