Antique Hand-Crank Barn Beam Boring Machine – Timber Framing Woodworking Tool

An impressive antique hand-cranked timber-framing boring machine, dating to approximately the late 19th or early 20th century. This substantial early woodworking tool was designed to bore holes into heavy wooden beams for traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, particularly in barn construction, timber framing, and post-and-beam buildings.

The machine features a heavy wooden frame and extended base, substantial iron gearing, two hand cranks with turned wooden handles, a vertically mounted boring spindle, and curved iron guides that allow the boring assembly to be adjusted for angled work.

The exposed bevel gears and mechanical construction are particularly interesting, showcasing the ingenuity of early woodworking machinery before electric power tools became commonplace.

Maker and History

Remnants of the original manufacturer's lettering remain on the wooden base, although much of the marking has worn away over time. I have not been able to positively identify the maker.

Machines of this general design were manufactured during the 1800s and early 1900s for carpenters, barn builders, and timber framers. The construction is characteristic of that period.

Condition

This machine retains its antique wooden frame, extended base, two hand cranks, iron gearing, and adjustable support hardware.

The original finish shows considerable age, with surface wear, scratches, discoloration, accumulated dust, and oxidation on the iron components. The wooden handles also show age-related wear.

The boring bit is missing. I have not fully tested the machine under working conditions and am selling it as an antique woodworking tool for restoration, collection, or display.

The surviving mechanical components, dark aged wood, and substantial ironwork give this machine a wonderful primitive industrial appearance.

A fascinating survivor from the days when barns and timber-framed buildings were constructed with hand-powered tools, ready for its next chapter.
