Antique Tibetan Gilt and Silvered Copper Shrine (Ghau)
Origin: Tibet / Nepal
Period: 18th Century Qing Dynasty
Dimensions: 5 x 7 inches (Approx. 12.7 x 17.8 cm)
Description
A substantial and finely crafted Ghau (portable travel shrine) of traditional ogival \"portal\" form. The piece features a multi-metal construction typical of high-quality Himalayan liturgical art.
• Front Panel: The face is meticulously executed in high-relief repoussé and chased silver-alloy (commonly referred to as \"Tibetan Silver\"). The iconography is centered around a central viewing window, framed by the Eight Auspicious Symbols (Ashtamangala). The top is crowned by a powerful depiction of Garuda (the mythical devourer of serpents), while the base features the protective Zeeba (Kirtimukha) face.
• Gilding: The central window frame and key decorative motifs feature significant fire-gilding (mercury gilding), displaying a rich, matte-gold luster with authentic age-related wear.
• Case & Construction: The side walls and reverse are fashioned from heavy-gauge red copper, showing a deep, natural chocolate-brown patina and verdigris consistent with age. Two sturdy strap-loops are affixed to the sides, historically used for securing the shrine during pilgrimage.
Condition Report
The shrine is in excellent antique condition. The metalwork remains crisp with no major indentations or structural loss. The fire-gilt highlights remain remarkably intact. The interior is currently empty (historically would have housed a Tsa-Tsa or sacred relics) and the backplate retains its original fit.
Provenance : From a private collection This 5x7 inch example is significantly larger than standard personal pendants, suggesting it was intended for both travel and domestic altar use.
Key Vocabulary for your records:
• Repoussé: The technique of hammering metal from the reverse to create a design in low relief.
• Chasing: The technique used on the front of the metal to refine the details of the design.
• Patina: The natural oxidation on the surface of the copper and silver that proves its age.
• Mercury Gilding: The traditional, high-quality method of applying gold to copper/bronze.
