Antique Theodore Roosevelt silk textile portrait panel, executed by the Paterson Silk Textile Institute, circa 1900.

This is a scarce early American pictorial silk portrait of Theodore Roosevelt, with visible silk/fabric texture throughout the image, facsimile Roosevelt signature below the portrait, and maker inscription reading:

“Executed by the Paterson Silk Textile Institute”

This same type of Roosevelt silk portrait is documented in institutional collections, including Sagamore Hill National Historic Site / Theodore Roosevelt Center and Cornell University’s Political Americana Collection. The piece is also referenced in Joyce Marquess Cary’s article “Salut, Monsieur Jacquard!” in Handwoven, May 1981, p. 58, which notes that the Paterson Silk Institute produced a “page-sized picture of Theodore Roosevelt.”

The Paterson Silk Textile Institute was located in Paterson, New Jersey, historically known as “Silk City,” and this piece fits within the tradition of American pictorial silk / jacquard textile production from the turn of the century.

Framed under glass in an older frame. The portrait appears to be in very nice antique condition overall, with natural age toning and expected wear. I have not removed it from the frame. Please see all photos for exact condition, texture, frame, and visible measurements.
