Up for sale is a museum-quality antique 19th-century Sri Lankan Piha Kaetta dagger (Kandyan knife). This exceptional piece showcases the elite craftsmanship of the traditional hereditary guilds working under the Kingdom of Kandy. Sourced from an esteemed estate—complete with a vintage archival collection inventory tag—this weapon is an exquisite find for collectors of fine ethnographic arms and armor.
Design & Craftsmanship
The Blade: Features the iconic heavy, single-edged steel profile with a remarkably thick back. The upper section and the spine are spectacularly embellished with thick, integrated panels of deeply chased gilt-brass work depicting traditional liya-vela (scrolling vine and leaf floral patterns).
The Hilt / Handle: The characteristic pistol-grip handle is beautifully carved from a highly polished, translucent amber-toned natural horn. It features traditional liya-pata (Sinhalese stylized wave/organic scroll decoration) cascading toward a heavy cast pommel cap.
The Bolster: The ornate, silvered brass ferrule provides a flawless transition from the hilt to the blade, showcasing crisp geometric border frames.
Presentation Case: The dagger rests perfectly in its rare, long, custom-fitted wooden case lined with black vintage and secured with a working brass latch.
Condition
Blade: Sturdy and tight. The hand-forged steel shows minor age-appropriate surface oxidation and deep grey patination. The golden/brass floral inlay panels along the spine remain exceptionally bright, crisp, and 100% complete.
Hilt: Outstanding antique condition. The carved horn grip displays a beautiful glass-like polish with zero cracks, splits, or repairs.
Case: Structurally sound with minor exterior handling wear. The internal velvet lining is well-preserved and cradles the dagger safely.
