Antique Schütz Cilli Majolica Plate 7.75" Austrian Begonia Leaf Greek Key MARKED:
$48.68
Brand/Maker: Schütz Cilli (Gebrüder Schütz)
Origin: Austria (Cilli / Liboje)
Circa: 1870–1890
Dimensions: 7.75" Diameter
Overview: Offered by The Lost Ark, this is a stunning piece of Victorian-era Majolica featuring the factory's diagnostic "stippled" or "cheesecloth" background. This specialized ground provides a brilliant depth to the vibrant emerald green and chocolate brown glazes.
Design Highlights:
Classical Border: A striking Greek Key (fretwork) border.
Botanical Relief: Central begonia leaf and fern fronds in high relief.
The Mark: Reverse features the impressed Schütz Cilli "sunburst/fan" workman's mark, confirming its Austrian heritage. According to Bergesen's Majolica (the standard reference for Continental ceramics), these blind marks were used as "workman’s marks" to identify which artisan in the factory produced the piece. While these symbols changed periodically, the sunburst/fan is specifically associated with their Liboje (Cilli) production facility during the high-export period of 1870–1890.
Condition Report:
Front: Exceptional vintage condition; colors remain vibrant with no chips or repairs.
Back: Shows characteristic "long-line" linear crazing (shattered glass style) consistent with authentic 19th-century earthenware.
