Antique Rosenthal R&C Bavaria Vase Hand Painted Roses Raised Gold c.1900 4.75”
Description
An exceptionally beautiful antique porcelain vase made by Rosenthal & Co. of Bavaria, Germany, dating to approximately 1891–1906.
Measuring approximately 4 3/4 inches tall, this petite cabinet vase is remarkable for the richness and intricacy of its decoration. Delicate hand-painted pink roses are scattered across the luminous white porcelain, with each blossom framed by an elaborate raised-gold lattice. Tiny applied gold bows accent the intersections of the latticework.
Additional raised gilding forms graceful Art Nouveau-style scrolls and stylized floral elements around the base and shoulder. The vase is completed by a sculptural, heavily gilded ruffled mouth. The decoration is sometimes described as raised paste gilding, raised gold enamel, or gold relief. It creates a wonderfully dimensional, almost jeweled effect.
The individual variations and visible brushwork in the roses indicate that they were hand painted rather than mechanically transferred.
Marked on the underside with the early crowned R&C crossed-mark above “Bavaria,” identifying Rosenthal & Co. The early mark and decorative style suggest a date around the turn of the 20th century.
A genuinely unusual Rosenthal vase. I have been unable to locate another example with this same combination of miniature hand-painted roses and exceptionally elaborate raised-gold latticework.
Measurements
Approximately 4 3/4 inches tall.
Condition
Very good antique condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs observed. The raised-gold decoration shows scattered age-related rubbing, fine scratches, darkening, and minor surface wear, particularly along some of the lattice lines and projecting areas. These signs of age are visible in the close-up photographs and do not detract from the vase’s striking overall appearance. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
