Beautiful and unusually elaborate vintage gilt-metal oval portrait/picture frame, featuring deeply modeled openwork acanthus leaves, scrolling foliage and shell-inspired ornament in the Rococo / Baroque Revival tradition.
At approximately 10¾–11 inches tall overall, this is a substantial decorative tabletop frame with considerably more presence than a typical small vintage photo frame.
Based on its cast-metal construction, naturally aged surface and hardware, I believe this is likely an early-to-mid 20th century piece, although its exact age, maker and country of origin have not been confirmed.
Of particular interest, the reverse bears the cast number “18880,” apparently incorporated into the original casting. This is believed to be a pattern/model or casting number; I have not been able to conclusively associate it with a particular manufacturer.
The reverse retains a simple metal easel stand, backing and individual bent-wire retaining clips. Glass is present.
CONDITION:
Very nice vintage condition with considerable authentic age and character. The gilt/gold-tone surface shows darkening, oxidation/patina, rubbing, finish loss and other age-related wear throughout. I have intentionally not polished or refinished the frame, preserving its beautiful aged appearance. Easel remains functional.
