Description & Historical Significance

Offered for sale is an exquisite 19th-century reticulated French porcelain centerpiece compote, originally retailed by the legendary Boston luxury firm Shreve, Crump & Low Co. This piece is a masterclass in Victorian ceramic engineering. The "reticulated" (hand-pierced) lattice work on the bowl and pedestal was a high-risk technique; each diamond had to be cut by hand while the clay was "leather-hard" before firing, a process where even a small mistake could cause the entire piece to collapse in the kiln.

Design Highlights:

  • Provenance: Features the original blue oval "Shreve, Crump & Low Co." retailer sticker on the underside.

  • The Palette: Decorated in a rich "Empire" emerald green with heavy, hand-applied gold gilt accents. The contrast between the vibrant green and the white lattice creates a striking visual depth.

  • The Base: The pedestal sits on four ornate lion-paw feet with gilded details, a hallmark of high-quality Neo-Classical and Victorian formal ware.

Condition Report
  • Overall: Excellent antique condition given its age and the fragility of the pierced work.

  • Porcelain: No visible cracks or major chips to the delicate lattice work, which is rare for this style.

  • Gilding: Minor "rubbing" or shelf-wear to the gold gilt on the rim and the feet, consistent with 100+ years of light use.

  • Hardware: Original metal bolt shows some oxidation/rusting as expected, but remains tight and secure.

  • Please review all high-resolution photos as they form part of the description.

Dimensions (Approximate)
  • Bowl Width: ~16"

  • Base Depth: ~9"
