Antique Pewter Beer Stein Niche Tankard Soldier/Landsknecht with Crossbow Nuremberg c.1880s

Description: This wonderful and quite unusual pewter beer stein was made around 1880s as part of the \"Historismus\" aesthetic movement -it\'s a version of the so-called \"Guild Tankards\" that were made in late 1600s - early 1700s in Germany. There are very few of the originals remaining and they are extremly expensive.

This particular stein shows a Medieval soldier or Landsknecht with a crossbow inside the niche that appears to be in the forest. The soldier is holding the crossbow \"bolts\" in his other hand. On the top of the stein is a Gargoyle holding a shield with a rampant lion. The feet show lion faces.

There is a mark on the handle that looks like a typical pewterer\'s mark of the town of Nuremberg - a shield with half-an eagle and half diagonal stripes. The year on top shows 1709. I was not able to find the exact mark using my sources but there are severaq very similar mark from the pewterers of Nuremberg. The year on top is usually the year of the foundation of the pewter shop. So the mark could be the real mark of a Nuremberg pewterer or a fictitious Nuremberg mark. The rampant lion on top is actually a heraldic symbol of the state of Bavaria where Nuremberg is located.

Beautiful and impressive. The stein is 13\" tall. 1.5 L capacity. It is in a very good condition with a just some minor dings and no damage whatsoever.     Condition: Very good Year: 1880s Country: Germany Height: 13 in.   Materials: Pewter Get images that
make Supersized seem small.
