Description:For your consideration is a beautiful, authentic pair of 19th-century French Old Paris Porcelain mantel urns. These substantial 10-inch statement pieces feature finely hand-painted romantic genre scenes depicting courting lovers in 18th-century period attire. The reverse side of each urn is beautifully detailed with a hand-painted botanical panel of roses and forget-me-nots framed by an orange and black scroll cartouche, making them stunning from any angle. The classical campana bodies feature heavy gold gilt accents and twin scroll handles terminating in molded satyr masks. True to period production methods, each piece is constructed in multiple parts secured by an internal central iron rod and nut assembly on the underside. An incised worker's shaper/mold number is present in the raw paste under the glaze on the bottom.
Condition Report: Porcelain Body: Excellent antique structural condition. Both urns are solid with NO major chips, structural cracks.
***Surface Finish: There is a circular patch of old clear lacquer/varnish residue on the lower basin of one urn that has become brittle and is flaking away from the smooth glaze underneath (purely cosmetic finish issue as seen in interior pic there’s no structural damage, the porcelain beneath is entirely solid). There’s also a spot like this where a lacquer finish is peeling away as well on the other vase on the underside of the top rim as seen in pics… very minor. I believe these were possibly attempted laquer touch ups over the years. The raw material upper rims show dark discoloration from age and the raw edges are a little rough feeling in spots.
Gilding: Shows honest, age-appropriate rubbing and wear, particularly along the square base plinths and handle stems, typical for 150+ year old gold leaf.
