The Ohio Tool Company began operation in Columbus, Ohio, in 1851. Given the company stamp style and the handwritten owner's mark dated 1862 on the side stock, this plane was manufactured in the early Civil War period, with an estimated production date between 1851 and 1862.
History on the Signature & Date:
Inscribed in ink/iron gall on the side of the wooden body is a clear, elegant cursive script reading:
"L. H. Baleich"
"Sept 1862"
It was standard practice for mid-19th-century carpenters, cabinetmakers, and tradesmen to neatly ink, carve, or stamp their names onto their personal tools to establish ownership on job sites. The handwritten date of September 1862 provides a fascinating Civil War-era provenance, marking when tradesman L. H. Baleich placed this tool into service.

The wood stock retains a rich patina with minor scuffs, wear, and light surface marks typical for a working 19th-century tool.
