Antique Nippon Hand Painted Porcelain Hair Receiver For Sale

This antique Nippon hair receivermeasures approximately 2 3/8” in height (including lid) and 4 ¼” indiameter. It is a pretty porcelain piecethat features a bright white background hand decorated with pink and yellowflowers, green leaves and baby blue and gold painted stripes. The lid has a scalloped rim and embossedbeading surrounds the opening while the base displays a scalloped and footedbottom. This hair receiver is markedwith the Nippon green wreath stamp, a mark that indicates that this piece wasproduced in Japan sometime between 1891 and 1921. Despite some manufacturing flaws and slight wearto the gold trim, this lovely hair receiver is in very good condition with nochips, cracks, crazing or any evidence of damage.

Hair Receiver Definition: During the Victorian era hair receivers werecommon dressing/vanity fixtures. Thepurpose of the hair receiver was to save hair from hairbrushes and combs. Hair was inserted into the hole in the lidand saved for future purposes such as stuffing for pincushions, pillows andmost popularly for use in the creation of “Ratts”. Ratts were sheer hair nets that were stuffedfull of collected hair and then sewn shut.These ratts were nothing more than fashionable buns used to enhancehairstyles of that time period.
