Antique late-19th-century scrapbook album focused primarily on the assassination of President James A. Garfield, with additional Abraham Lincoln, and Civil War content.
This album contains newspaper clippings from multiple publications, with the majority dating to the 1870s–1890s. I’ve only seen a few pieces dating to 1900–1920, along with one Harper’s Weekly featuring Lincoln on the cover dated 1865.
19 Y95 Presidential die-cut scrap pictures.
Measurements are as follows:
• Abraham Lincoln – 46mm tall x 36mm wide
• George Washington – 46mm tall x 35mm wide
• E Pluribus Unum Eagle – 44mm x 50mm(Eagle wing tip corner is broken off but the tip is there)
This is a substantial, well-filled album measuring approximately 17” tall x 14.25” wide x 1.5” thick, containing 50+ pages of period material.
Back cover of the scrapbook is dated 1872.
Contents include:
• Loose cabinet card photograph measuring approx. 10” x 8”, stored within the album
• Extensive Garfield assassination-related illustrations, imagery, notes & quotes
• Abraham Lincoln assassination-related imagery
• Few Original Harper’s Weekly pages front covers
• An 1885 Daily Graphic newspaper(loose in the album)
• Various original newspaper clippings and portrait prints
Photograph & Provenance Notes:
The cabinet card photograph dates to the 1880s–1890s and shows a man wearing a frock coat with a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) badge on his vest. Based on all the info, the album very likely belonged to him, & it makes sense as he was a Civil War Veteran
Cabinet card has a large signature on the front & a smaller signature on the back
Signatures (best interpretation):
• Samuel Willcott
• John J. Coleman? or John J. Eilmanns?
Due to age and handwriting style, signatures are offered as best interpretation.
Condition:
• The binding has been reinforced with heavy-duty bookbinding repair tape and is holding the album together securely. Binding is intact
• Expected age-related wear throughout
• Edge wear, toning, foxing, and handling marks
• Some items are loose and were stored inside the album
I’ve included multiple collage-style photos to show as much content as possible due to ’s 24-photo limit. There may be a couple duplicate photos to provide close-up views.
Please review all photos carefully, as they are considered part of the description.
A remarkable historical survivor piece—I’ve genuinely enjoyed going through it multiple times.
