For sale is an exceptional, museum-quality piece of early Native American history: an authentic, hand-forged Navajo (Diné) ingot copper cuff bracelet.
Before silver became readily available on the reservation, Diné metalworkers honed their skills using copper. This heavy-gauge, historic bracelet was most likely crafted for personal use within the tribe (ethnographic) rather than the lightweight tourist souvenir trade.
This cuff is ingot: hand-pounded and sheared from either a solid copper bar or salvaged heavy-gauge copper vessel. The hammer blows are easily visible on the inside of the bracelet.There\'s also the irregular thickness and width across the band that\'s consistent with metal hammered out (not made from commercial sheets).
Another indication of the bracelet\'s age is none of the stamp work was done with aready-made commercial decorative jewelry stamps that in later years the smith would be able to buy at the trading post. The designs on this bracelet were made with two tools: a re-purposed leather tool (the crescent shape) and the circle (possibly the end of a chisel or punch).
Measurements: ¾ inch wide, just under 7½ inch outside diameter, 6⅞ inch inside diameterand a gap of ¾ inch.
This bracelet belongs in a museum collection or in the collection of an advanced collector of Native American jewelry.
