ANTIQUE NATIVE AMERICAN BOTTLE BASKET
GREAT BASIN, PAIUTE TYPE
CA. 1880-1920
DIMENSIONS
About 7" x 6" x 6"
DESCRIPTION
Fine antique Native American twined bottle basket of classic Great Basin form. Probably Paiute origin, possibly Shoshone or Washoe. Tightly woven in a globular vessel shape with constricted neck and small shoulder loops. Constructed of willow or related native plant fibers. Rigid original shape. Retains remnants of woven strap handle. Lack of waterproofing material, such as resin or clay suggests that it was probably used as a utilitarian vessel for carrying seeds, grains, other small foodstuffs.
CONDITION
Overall very good antique condition. Some roughage around the bottle rim. Structurally sturdy and rigid. Rich, nut-brown age patina (all visible in the images).
