ANTIQUE MRS. WINSLOW\'S SOOTHING SYRUP BOTTLE
Important piece of 19th-century American patent-medicine history.
This antique aqua/green-tinted glass bottle is embossed with the famous product name:
MRS. WINSLOW\'S SOOTHING SYRUP
Mrs. Winslow\'s Soothing Syrup was one of the best-known proprietary medicines marketed to parents during the 19th century, particularly for infants during teething. Historical examples are documented in museum and archaeological collections, including bottles with the distinctive vertical embossed lettering seen on this example.
A FASCINATING — AND DARK — PIECE OF MEDICAL HISTORY
The bottle represents an era when proprietary medicines were marketed with claims that would be unacceptable today.
Mrs. Winslow\'s Soothing Syrup became notorious because its early formulations contained morphine, which was given to infants to quiet pain and crying. Historical sources document the morphine-containing formulation and the serious dangers associated with its use.
That history is one reason these bottles remain so interesting to collectors of:
Patent medicine • medical history • pharmacy antiques • American advertising • antique bottles • Victorian-era collectibles
THE BOTTLE
This example has an attractive pale aqua / greenish glass color, cylindrical form and strong embossed lettering.
The product name is molded directly into the glass rather than printed on a label, which gives the piece excellent display appeal.
Comparable documented examples have been identified as 19th-century bottles, with early examples bearing Curtis & Perkins, Proprietors embossing. Later examples use successor-company wording, so the additional side embossing is important for determining the exact variant and date.
