Native American buffalo hide shield, often referred to as a medicine shield or dance shield depending on its specific ceremonial or ritual use. Construction suggests this is traditional Plains or Southwest Native American, featuring tightly stretched hide adorned with horsehair, bone hairpipe beads, a prayer feather (now in rough condition), and metal hawk bells. Evidence suggests additional feathers were once present but are now missing.
An impressive example measuring approximately 20\" x 18\". The shield remains sturdy and displays well, with condition that is quite good considering its age and materials. Please review all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
Provenance: Acquired in the early 1990s from Allard\'s sales, a respected Lakota-owned sale house formerly based in Montana. Allard\'s specialized in important Native American antiques and artifacts and was well known for its annual \"Best of Santa Fe\" sales, where this piece was originally purchased.
