Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size woodblock print created by the renowned artist Toyohara (Yoshu) Chikanobu (1838-1912). He was one of the most prominent artists and printmakers during the Meiji era (1868-1912) in Japanese history.
Born in 1838 in Niigata Prefecture, Toyohara Chikanobu was the elder of two sons. His father was a samurai, a retainer of the Sakakibara clan. He studied Kano school painting as a child and developed an interest in ukiyo-e in his teens. He studied with Kuniyoshi and then with Kunisada and Kunichika.
During the Meiji Restoration, he joined the Tokugawa shogun’s elite samurai brigade, the shogitai, and fought against the emperor’s forces in the Battle of Ueno and the Battle of Hakodate. After the fall of the shogunate, he went to Tokyo and began making a living as a woodblock print artist.
The print presented was published in 1898. It is portraying a procession for the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the renaming of Edo to Tokyo. In other words, it was a celebration of the 30 years of the Meiji period. Chikanobu is famous for capturing the views and details of everyday life among Japanese people during the Meiji Restoration.
