Antique Japanese Emperor Hirohito 1921 Europe Tour Commemorative Tea Saucers:
$249.00

DescriptionIn 1921, a 20-year-old Japanese Crown Prince embarked on a remarkable journey to Europe. His name was Hirohito—the young man who would later become Emperor of Japan during World War II.It was the first European tour undertaken by a Japanese Crown Prince. He visited Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy, meeting royalty and experiencing European society firsthand. The journey was more than a diplomatic visit. It gave the future emperor an opportunity to learn about the wider world before assuming greater responsibilities. Just months after returning to Japan, Hirohito became Prince Regent, carrying out imperial duties on behalf of his ailing father, Emperor Taisho. These three metal tea saucers commemorate that historic journey. Each bears the inscription “東宮殿下御西遊記念”, meaning “Commemorating His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince’s Journey to the West.”Their detailed designs feature a globe, national flags, and ships—a fascinating reflection of how Japan commemorated international travel more than a century ago.Today, Hirohito is best remembered as Japan’s wartime emperor. But these saucers tell an earlier story: a young Crown Prince encountering Europe, years before his accession to the throne in 1926 and the dramatic events that would follow.Condition: Set of three metal saucers, approximately 10.5 cm (4.1 inches) in diameter and 2 cm (0.8 inches) high. Age-related discoloration, scratches, and surface wear are present. The exact metal composition and manufacturing date have not been verified. Please examine the photographs carefully.A small but tangible reminder of a remarkable moment in Japanese imperial history.Own a Piece of History.Shipping
