“Commemorative Photographs of the Crown Prince’s European Tour”
“France and Belgium”This 1921 journey was an important event in the history of the Japanese Imperial Family.Members of the Imperial Family had traveled abroad before, but Hirohito’s tour was a landmark because the future Emperor traveled through Europe on a large-scale official visit while still Crown Prince. At only 20 years old, Hirohito visited Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and other European countries, where he encountered European royal courts, governments, military institutions, and public life directly. This set focuses on the French and Belgian stages of that journey. The postcards show official receptions, military formations and reviews, ceremonial carriages, meetings with local officials and dignitaries, and other scenes from the Crown Prince’s travels. This is much more than a general royal postcard set.It is a contemporary visual record of the young Hirohito stepping onto the international stage before becoming Emperor.Only months after returning to Japan, Hirohito became Prince Regent in November 1921, assuming the constitutional duties of his father, Emperor Taisho. For that reason, this European tour can be seen as one of the important turning points in the life of the future Emperor Hirohito. All eight postcards remain together with the original wrapper.A fascinating surviving record of Crown Prince Hirohito’s 1921 visit to France and Belgium, preserved in period color printing.Own a Piece of History.Shipping
