Antique JAPANESE PORCELAIN SATSUMA BOWL HAND PAINTED Floral Pattern Japan Mejii Period

A very attractive Japanese Satsuma bowl featuring scenes of life in Ancient Japan, as well as beautiful hand painted floral patterns on the bowl's center and sides.

We are pleased to offer this hand painted ceramic Japanese bowl, done with extensive and stunning scene of life in ancient Japan, done amongst beautiful floral and plant patterns.

Though the bowl says Satsuma on the mark at the bottom (see photos) it does not share the yellow crackled glaze that characterizes Satsuma pottery. Given the designs of the characters on the bowl, we estimate this item might be from the later Mejii Period (1868 - 1912) which was a period when Japan saw extensive sales of Satsuma pottery to other countries. It may have been labeled Satsuma for that reason.

In any case, the bowl itself is a beautiful example of hand painted porcelain. There are subtle differences in the flowers decorating the bowl, and even the faces of the characters show their own distinct features. The bowl is decorated with a lovely red trim that is flanked top and bottom by gold stripes.

This bowl has a diameter of 8 inches, is 2 inches deep, and weighs 1 pound 10 ounces.

This bowl has no cracks, chips, or crazing that we can find. The top of the rim is missing about 40% of its gold trim, most likely due to use, though this does not interfere with the enjoyment of the piece. The hand painted decorations of the bowl all seem to be intact and the colors are still strong and vibrant.

For the empty section of the display case, shelf or end table, this hand painted bowl is a great find!
