Antique wooden molding plane stamped with the \"Union Factory Warranted\" and \"H. Chapin\" maker\'s mark.
(Hermon Chapin or the Chapin family of planemakers)
Dating:
Curved two-line \"Union Factory / Warranted\" oval with \"H. Chapin\" straight across the center—was exclusively used while the firm\'s founder, Hermon Chapin, was the sole proprietor running the factory in Pine Meadow, Connecticut. The company changed names several times, allowing collectors to pinpoint production windows based on the text structure on the toe:
1828–1860: Stamped H. Chapin / Union Factory (This matches this plane).
1860–1864: Changed to H. Chapin & Sons when Hermon\'s sons joined the business.
1865–1868: Changed to H. Chapin’s Sons after one son left the partnership.
1868–1897: Changed to H. Chapin’s Son when Edward Chapin took sole control.
1901–1929: Merged to become the Chapin-Stephens Co.
