Commonly referred to as a civil war era amputation saw, this is more likely just a butcher\'s saw. It is a knife on one side and a saw on the other. Knife edge is sharp and shows no nicks or dings. Saw is also sharp. Handle is in great shape and is firmly attached to handle with on through cracks. Makers mark is clear and reads, \"H & C DISSTON PHILADA\" Used it to carve up some ribs and it worked great.
To clear things up here is a quote from the 1926 Disston Catalog:
\"A tool that is classed with these bone and meat-cutting
saws, and yet is more than a saw is the Saw-knife. This is a knife with
double-cutting edge, coming to a point at the end. One edge is used for
sawing, while the other is used for ordinary cutting.\"
