Offered here is an impressive large antique hand-blown green glass Kugel-style Christmas ornament, also commonly referred to by collectors as a witch ball when found in these larger sizes.
The piece measures approximately 8inches across and approximately 8 inches tall overall, including the neck. Please refer to the photographs showing the ruler for additional measurement reference.
This is a substantial piece of old blown glass with a beautiful deep emerald-green color and reflective silvered interior. The glass itself is thick and displays numerous bubbles, seeds, inclusions and irregularities associated with traditional hand-blown manufacture. The globe is not perfectly uniform, giving it the wonderful character expected from an early handmade piece.
The interior retains a considerable amount of its reflective silvering, although the finish has developed extensive age-related spotting, oxidation, darkening and areas of loss. These areas create the dramatic mottled mirror effect visible in the photographs.
The short blown-glass neck remains exposed. The original metal cap and hanging hardware are no longer present.
The piece shows considerable evidence of age, including surface scratches, scuffs, discoloration, manufacturing imperfections and deterioration of the interior silvering. It has not been aggressively cleaned, polished or restored.
No major cracks or breaks are observed. As with any antique hand-blown glass object of this age, please carefully review all photographs for the most accurate representation of condition.
Large Kugel ornaments such as this were considerably heavier than later thin-glass Christmas ornaments and could be suspended from ceilings, windows or other supports rather than placed directly on a Christmas tree. Large silvered examples are also frequently collected under the traditional witch ball terminology.
The combination of the large scale, rich green glass, heavy hand-blown construction, numerous bubbles and beautifully aged mirrored surface gives this piece tremendous visual presence.
