Antique German Beer Stein High Wheel Bicycle Bike by J.L.Knoedgen c.1890s
: Beautiful antique German beer stein dedicated to the sport of cycling and showing a cyclist proudly standing by his old time high wheel bicycle. The side panels show Cupids riding the same high-wheel machines. The high-wheelers or "penny-farthing" bicycles were common in 1880s, by the mid-1890s they were mostly replaced by the safety bicycles.
Made of saltglazed stoneware with cobalt-blue, green an magenta glazes. The type of the decoration and pewter lids were common around 1890s. The inscriptions read:
“Guten Muthes frisch voran –
Frohes Herz schafft gute Bahn.”
(Advance with an optimistic mind –
a happy heart creates a good path.)
There is no manufacturer's mark or model number (just a scratched #8 - not model number), but the design is very similar - to model 750 by J.L.KNoedgen - one of the obscure names in ceramics manufacturing in the Golden Era of beer-steins production in late 1800-s - early 1900s. This manufacturer was made known by Frank Loewi, the author of online "Beer Stein Library".
