Antique German 800 Silver Trinket Box - Figural Portrait Lesson Scene
An especially appealing antique German 800 silver trinket box, distinguished by an unusual figural scene on the lid. Rather than the more familiar pastoral or romantic subject, the repoussé decoration appears to depict a portrait lesson, with a seated subject beside an easel - a wonderfully individual detail that gives this small box real character.
The box measures approximately 3 inches in diameter and 2 inches high and weighs approximately 5 3/4 oz. It is marked 800, with additional partially worn hallmarks including what appears to be a remnant of GERMANY and an unidentified calligraphic maker/workshop mark. These markings and the style are consistent with a late 19th- to early 20th-century German origin.
The interior is a striking, bright gold-colored finish and is exceptionally clean and attractive. The lid fits the base snugly and securely when placed in position. Condition note: The hinge is not functioning and the lid is presently detached at the hinge area; the lid nevertheless seats snugly on the box. Surface wear and patina are consistent with age.
Please examine the photographs carefully, including the hallmark and hinge views, as they form an important part of the description.
A handsome and unusual piece of continental silver - small enough for a dressing table or collection, but with a far more interesting subject than the typical antique trinket box.
