Antique French Sarreguemines Jardiniere Footed Ceramic Bowl Red 1408264 For Sale

Produced by the celebrated Utzschneider and Company factory in Sarreguemines, France, this footed jardiniere bowl is a fine example of French transferware from the late 19th to early 20th century. The maker's mark stamped on the base reads "JARDINIERE U&C SARREGUEMINES" in deep red, confirming both the pattern name and manufacturer. The Sarreguemines Jardiniere transferware bowl form was produced in multiple sizes and colorways, and the red-on-cream version is among the more sought-after by collectors.

The exterior is decorated in a rich crimson red transfer print on a cream earthenware body, featuring dense floral motifs including peonies, roses, wild roses and smaller botanical sprigs arranged across the curved body. A geometric diamond lattice band runs around the upper rim and the pedestal foot, framing the central floral scene. On either side, the bowl is fitted with a pair of scroll and acanthus leaf handles applied in relief, also decorated with the red transfer. The interior shows crazing throughout the glaze and considerable patina consistent with age and use, clearly visible in the photos. The outer glaze retains its shine in areas. No chips or cracks are visible externally, though the crazing is pronounced.

The bowl measures approximately 21cm wide excluding handles and 15cm in diameter at the rim, as noted by the seller, with an estimated height of around 13cm / 5.1". Including the scroll handles, the overall width extends to approximately 27cm / 10.6". These dimensions place it in a mid-size range suitable as a centrepiece vessel.

A piece like this works well displayed as a decorative centrepiece, filled with dried botanicals or fruit. It would suit a collected grouping of French transferware or Sarreguemines pottery, and attracts interest from both French ceramics specialists and transferware enthusiasts.
