A handsome late 19th-century French glove box in the Napoleon III taste. The long, narrow form was made to hold gloves, but it works just as well for jewelry, pens, letters, or keepsakes.Dimensions: 12-1/2” x 4”x 2-1/2” in.The lid has a central panel of richly figured burl veneer with a blank shaped brass cartouche, ready for engraving. It sits inside a molded ebonized frame with fine brass line inlay. The front matches, with a burl panel in an ebonized, brass-strung border and a keyhole escutcheon. The sides are veneered in a dense, eye-figured burl, and the base is solid wood with an old circled inventory number in pencil.Inside, the box is lined in its original golden silk, with a padded base. It has its original brass hinges and a working-style brass box lock with a lid catch. No key is included.Condition:
Honest age-appropriate wear, best seen in the photos: • The ebonized finish on the lid frame is worn and spotted.
• Scattered scratches and surface wear.
• Small veneer losses and chips at corners and edges, including one rear corner of the base and one corner of the lid.
• The silk lining is complete but fragile. The base has splits showing the cotton padding, a torn section along the front, and some staining.
