This is an especially handsome example, constructed from richly grained dark hardwood with a bold, architectural silhouette. The cross is assembled in multiple stepped layers, giving it wonderful depth and a distinctly Art Deco appearance. Long geometric metal inlays accent the arms, crown and base, producing an almost Machine Age contrast against the warm brown wood.
The raised figure of Christ is exceptionally ornate and dimensional, with a crown of thorns, expressive facial features, carefully modeled hands and feet, and deeply folded drapery. Above the corpus is a separate scroll-form INRI plaque, representing the Latin inscription Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum—“Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”
The corpus and plaque appear to be gold-tone cast metal, most likely bronzed or gilt spelter, with an attractive mellow finish and darker patina settled naturally into the recessed details. The silvery-gray decorative strips appear to be metal inlay. Together with the layered hardwood construction, these details make the crucifix far more visually interesting than an ordinary flat wooden cross.
French religious workshops produced crucifixes in a remarkable variety of styles during the years between the two World Wars. This piece reflects the modern decorative vocabulary of that period—stepped outlines, straight geometric bands and contrasting materials—while retaining the traditional Catholic imagery that had appeared in French homes for generations.
A beautiful piece of French devotional art that would display wonderfully in a home altar, chapel, study, ecclesiastical collection, or grouping of antique religious objects.
